En route to the Vega Colony, the United Space Ship Enterprise picks up a radio distress signal from the S.S. Columbia, which disappeared in the Talos star group about 18 years ago. Science Officer Spock determines that the fourth planet is Class-M (oxygen atmosphere).

Captain Christopher Pike leads a landing party to Talos Four and discovers a camp of survivors from the crashed ship, but the captain is captured by aliens and the camp vanishes; the Enterprise crew realizes that the distress call and camp were illusions to lure them to the surface.

Captain Pike finds himself in an underground cage with a human woman named Vina, the only survivor of the crashed ship. The Talosians want the two humans to breed and create a servant race for them, but they release Pike once they realize that humans would rather die than live in captivity.
